Sucesssful Completion Of Electrical Demand Response Programs In Fort Wayne
Lafayette, Indiana – National Power Source, LLC has announced the successful completion of the first year of electrical demand response programs by three Fort Wayne facilities.
Participating in these programs are Parkview Hospital, Interstate Cold Storage, Inc. and Polar King International, Inc., all headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The demand response program is managed by PJM, which is a regional electrical transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in northeast Indiana over their power grid. These programs were created to protect this grid in times of high electrical demand during summer heat waves and other power related events affecting grid stability. At these times active demand response programs are vital to avoid power outages and brown outs.
At the beginning of 2008 these three operations, guided by National Power Source, enrolled their six operating units in PJM demand response programs. Under these programs, should an event arise affecting grid performance, all of these operations would curtail previously agreed to amounts of electricity for specified periods of time to ease the strain on the grid.
In return for enrolling in the program and being available for this curtailment, the grid operator made very significant incentive payments to these companies and institutions. The total incentive revenue earned by all of these parties was in excess of $160,000 for this first year.
These demand response programs are designed to avoid the need to construct stand by electrical generating capacity to offset high peak electrical demand.
Mike Riester, President of National Power Source remarked that “the action of facilities such as Parkview Hospital, Interstate Cold Storage and Polar King International, participating in demand response programs, along with many other similar companies and institutions throughout the country contribute to a “green solution” for a potentially serious electrical energy supply problem.”
National Power Source is committed to improving the electrical energy management practices of these companies and institutions, along with other clients in the region through innovative demand response program participation which benefits their communities by assuring a dependable supply of electricity.
